Your Jira Sprint, Played as a Quest

Questimate pulls issues straight from your Jira board, turns them into encounters your team estimates as an RPG party, and writes the agreed story points back when you’re done. One OAuth connection. No Jira plugins. No copying ticket numbers into a spreadsheet.

Jira Questimate Integration

What the Integration Actually Does

Most planning poker tools that claim Jira integration give you a one-way import and call it a day. Questimate does the full round trip:

Import your sprint backlog

Browse your Jira boards and sprints from inside Questimate. Pick the issues you want to estimate and they’re loaded as encounters — titles, descriptions, and any existing story point values come along for the ride. No re-typing ticket names, no “can someone paste the link in chat.”

Estimate with the full Questimate experience

Your imported Jira issues aren’t dumbed down into a plain list. They become encounters in a cooperative quest. Your team votes simultaneously as their character class, earns XP for consensus, triggers Parley when there’s disagreement, and gets loot drops along the way. The Jira context — title, description, status — is visible throughout so the party knows what they’re fighting.

Write story points back to Jira

When the team reaches consensus on an estimate, you write the agreed value back to the Jira issue with one click. Questimate auto-detects your story points custom field — no configuration, no field mapping. Nothing is written until you explicitly choose to, so you stay in control of what goes back to Jira.

Why This Beats a Jira Plugin

Jira Marketplace plugins bolt a voting panel onto Atlassian’s UI framework, which was never designed for real-time collaborative sessions. You get a functional widget inside a product management tool. The result is something your team tolerates, not something they engage with.

Questimate takes the opposite approach. The estimation experience is built from scratch — simultaneous hidden voting, structured Parley discussions when the team disagrees, RPG progression that rewards honest consensus. Jira handles your backlog and sprint management. Questimate handles the actual session. The OAuth integration connects the two so data flows both ways and neither tool has to compromise on what it’s good at.

Also: no plugin installation. Your Jira admin doesn’t need to approve a Marketplace app or worry about what it’s doing inside Jira. Questimate connects via standard Atlassian OAuth 2.0, scoped to just board/issue reads and story point writes.

Why This Beats a Standalone Poker Tool

Standalone planning poker tools — the ones without Jira integration — force you to recreate your backlog by hand. Someone copies issue titles into the tool, the team estimates, then someone else types story points back into Jira. There are two opportunities for transcription errors and a guaranteed “wait, which ticket were we on?” moment every session.

With Questimate’s Jira integration, your backlog is always in sync. Import directly from the sprint you’re planning, see the real Jira issue details while estimating, and push results back without leaving the session. The DM stays focused on facilitating discussion instead of babysitting a spreadsheet.

How Parley Works with Jira Issues

When your team disagrees on a Jira issue’s estimate, Questimate enters Parley — a structured 90-second discussion phase where the outlier voters explain their reasoning before the team re-votes. This isn’t just a countdown timer. It’s the mechanism that surfaces hidden assumptions about scope, complexity, and unknowns that the Jira ticket description alone didn’t make obvious.

Because the Jira issue context — title, description, status, assignee — is visible during Parley, the discussion stays grounded in the actual work. No flipping between tabs, no “can you read out the acceptance criteria again.” The issue is right there while the team talks it through.

Setup

Connecting takes about a minute. Questimate uses Atlassian’s standard OAuth 2.0 (3LO) — no Jira plugins, no Marketplace installs.

For the session host (DM)

  1. Create a Questimate session
  2. Choose “Import from Jira” and click “Link Atlassian Account”
  3. Authorize Questimate in the Atlassian consent screen
  4. Browse your boards, pick a sprint, and import issues
  5. Your connection is saved — next time you skip straight to the board picker

For everyone else

Nothing. Join the session with the code the DM shares, pick your character class, and vote. You don’t need a Jira account or any connection of your own. The DM’s connection handles all the Jira read/write.

If your Jira org restricts third-party apps

Some organizations require admin approval before users can authorize OAuth apps. If you see an error during the flow, ask your Jira admin to:

  1. Go to admin.atlassian.com → your organization → Security → API tokens & third-party apps
  2. Under “Third-party apps,” allow OAuth apps or add Questimate to the allow list

What Questimate Can and Can’t Access

Questimate requests the minimum Jira scopes needed for the integration to work:

  • Read boards and sprints — so you can browse and pick issues to estimate
  • Read issue details — titles, descriptions, story points, status, and assignee
  • Write story points — only when you explicitly click to sync an estimate back

Questimate does not access your Jira comments, attachments, worklogs, or anything outside the boards you select. Issue content is loaded during your session and discarded after — we don’t store it. OAuth tokens are encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM) and you can disconnect at any time, which immediately revokes access and deletes stored tokens.

Try It

Questimate is free — including the Jira integration. No trial periods, no feature gates, no “contact sales for the Jira add-on.”

Create a session, connect your Jira account, import a sprint, and see what estimation feels like when your team is actually paying attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every team member need to connect their Jira account?

No. Only the DM needs a Jira connection to import issues and write estimates back. Everyone else joins with a session code and votes — no Jira account required.

Can I use Questimate without Jira?

Absolutely. The Jira integration is optional. You can add encounters manually or just create a session without importing anything. The RPG experience, Parley, XP, loot — all of it works with or without Jira.

What if I can’t authorize during the OAuth flow?

Your Jira organization may restrict third-party app access. Ask your Jira admin to allow Questimate under admin.atlassian.com → Security → Third-party apps. Once allowed, you can authorize normally.

Does Questimate support Jira Data Center / Server?

Currently Jira Cloud only. Data Center and Server support may be added in the future.

How does Questimate find my story points field?

Jira uses custom field IDs that vary between instances. Questimate auto-detects your story points field by scanning your Jira configuration — no manual setup needed.

Is the Jira integration free?

Yes. Questimate is completely free, including Jira sync. No trial periods, no feature gates.
