Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Questimate — because “why is my planning poker tool asking me to pick a character class?” is a fair question.
What is Questimate?+
Questimate is planning poker, but instead of staring at a spreadsheet while someone reads Jira tickets aloud, your team goes on an RPG adventure. You pick character classes, earn XP, collect loot, and occasionally argue about whether that API migration is really a 3. It integrates with Jira so the estimates actually end up where they need to be.
Is Questimate free?+
Yes, completely free. No trial period, no "5 users free" bait-and-switch, no credit card required. Host sessions, invite your whole team, estimate to your heart's content. We may add premium features down the road, but the core estimation experience will always be free.
Does Questimate work with Jira?+
Yes. Questimate integrates with Jira via Atlassian Forge — the same platform Atlassian uses for its own apps. Import issues from your sprint, estimate them as a team, and write the agreed story points back to Jira with one click. No more alt-tabbing between tools and manually typing numbers.
Do I need an account to use Questimate?+
Only session hosts need to sign in (via a quick email magic link — no passwords to forget). Everyone else can join as a guest with just the session code and a display name. Guests who want to keep their character can create an account after the session.
What is Parley mode?+
When the team's estimates are all over the place (someone voted 2 and someone voted 21 — we've all been there), Parley mode kicks in. It's a structured discussion phase where the outliers explain their reasoning before the team re-votes. It turns "why did you vote THAT?" into a productive conversation.
What character classes are available?+
Four classes: Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Cleric. Each has its own visual style and avatars. Your class doesn't affect your estimates (that would be unbalanced), but it does give you an identity in the session. You'd be surprised how invested people get in their level 4 Rogue.
How many people can join a session?+
Up to 5 active voters per session, plus unlimited observers who can watch along without voting. Most agile teams estimate with 3–7 people, so this covers the sweet spot. Observers can jump in as participants at any time by creating a character.
What estimation scales does Questimate support?+
The standard Fibonacci sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, plus the ever-popular "?" for "I have no idea" and "infinity" for "this should be its own epic." Custom sequences are on the roadmap.
Can I use Questimate for remote teams?+
Questimate was built for remote teams. Everyone joins via a browser — no install, no plugin, no "can you see my screen?" drama. Real-time WebSocket sync means votes and reveals happen instantly regardless of where people are. The RPG mechanics help keep remote participants engaged instead of secretly checking Slack.
How do I host a session?+
Sign in with your email, click "Host a Session," and you'll get a 5-character code to share with your team. Add stories manually or import them from Jira, wait for your party to assemble, and start the quest. The whole setup takes about 30 seconds.
Does Questimate work on mobile?+
Yes. The interface is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops. You can also install it as a Progressive Web App for quick access. Estimating on the bus is entirely possible, though we can't guarantee the quality of those estimates.
What makes Questimate different from other planning poker tools?+
Most planning poker tools are functional but forgettable — a card grid, a timer, maybe a chat box. Questimate wraps the same estimation mechanics in a cooperative RPG: character classes, XP progression, loot drops, and tavern events between encounters. The result is that estimation sessions go from "do we have to?" to "whose turn is it to host?" We take the estimation seriously. We just don't take the ceremony seriously.
Is my data secure?+
We store the minimum data needed to operate: your email (hosts only), session data, and encrypted OAuth tokens if you connect Jira. We don't sell data, we don't run ads, and we don't do anything creepy with your story titles. Jira tokens are encrypted at rest and you can revoke access any time.
Can I export session results?+
Yes. Session hosts can export results at the end of a quest. If Jira is connected, estimates are also written directly back to your issues — because the whole point of estimating is that the numbers end up in your backlog, not in someone's head.
